Stop Super Speeders in North Carolina

Street racers and habitual speeders (aka Super Speeders) are 5x more likely to cause serious or deadly crashes than average drivers. A technology solution called Intelligent Speed Assistance can help prevent speeding crashes by limiting speeds for Super Speeders.

Liam Lagunas

Liam Lagunas, age 6, was on his way home from getting ice cream with his dad when a driver going over 100 mph hit their vehicle and took his life.

The driver responsible for Liam’s crash had a long history of speeding charges. He is what we call a Super Speeder

Super Speeders Cause Deadly Crashes

Super Speeders are drivers that routinely speed or have egregious violations – like street racing or driving more than 20 mph over the speed limit. These drivers cause a disproportionate number of severe and fatal crashes in North Carolina.

An investigation by the Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer found that around 16,000 people have been charged at least three times with extreme speeding (20 mph or more over the limit) between 2016 – 2020 in North Carolina. Dozens of those drivers whose charges were reduced or dismissed were later involved in fatal crashes.

Repeatedly ticketing Super Speeders doesn’t seem to deter them. Many of them continue to drive recklessly, even with suspended or revoked licenses. We need a new solution to stop Super Speeders from causing tragedies like the one that ended Liam’s life too soon. That solution is Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA).

What is Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA)?

ISA is a device that can be installed in any car and automatically limits speed to posted limits.

The Stop Super Speeders campaign proposes a policy which would allow courts to require ISA technology for drivers convicted of extreme or repeated speeding violations.
